Clinical Trial – St. Mary’s Hospital

The “St. Mary’s Hospital” clinical trial was a year-long study involving three regional hospitals that measured the outcomes of diabetes education centre clients who utilized the MedManager system for all of their post-education services. MedManager portal users experienced an improvement in biometric performance, as well as quality of life measures. The positive results of this trial were published in the Canadian Journal of Diabetes in December 2006. See the links below for additional information:

Results showed that:

• 90% of participants agreed that the online tools helped them communicate with the healthcare provider;
• 100% found the online interface easy to understand and follow; and,
• 100% found the program assisted with their gestational diabetes management.

Luther Village on the Park – Waterloo, Ontario

Luther Village on the Park is a retirement community in Waterloo that implemented MedManager’s online chronic disease management program in May 2007. Residents and healthcare staff use Internet-connected computers in Luther Village’s Wellness Centre and their private residences to access the online tools for education, health and lifestyle data collection, performance monitoring, event reminders and secure communication.

A secondary purpose of the Luther Village program is to conduct field testing of a Bluetooth-enabled blood glucose meter data transfer system developed by MedManager and the University of Waterloo’s Computer Systems Group. The research and testing was funded through a grant from the Health Technology Exchange.

Participating residents, whose average age is around 85, report that the program has improved their knowledge and control of diabetes, enhanced their access to healthcare services and was easy to use for computer novices.

Given the success of the trial, the online program is being continued and expanded to cover cardiac disease as well as diabetes.
